Khalsa Care Foundation Curriculum

Every Sunday, the students of the Sikh School of Los Angeles convene in the Sarab Sanja Darbar at the Khalsa Care Foundation to attend a Keertan Darbar conducted by the school students. School timings are:

  • From 09:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Keertan Darbar (30 minutes)
  • From 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. First Class (45 minutes)
  • From 10:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Recess (20 minutes)
  • From 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Second Class (45 minutes)
  • From 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Third Class (45 minutes)

Mommy & Me:
An early childhood class for Ages 3-5 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

PL100:
Punjabi language introductory level for students from age 4 and 5
Description:
Letter recognition through art work, sakhis, Guru Darbar etiquettes.

PL101A:
Punjabi language level 1 for students ages 6 and above.
Description:
Letter recognition, phonics, sound listening discrimination, saying sounds together, introduction to writing, introductory vocabulary. Letter grading.

Room 2 for ages 6 to 11; for ages 12 and above contact office.

PL101B:
Punjabi language level 2 for students ages 6 and above.
Prerequisite:
PLC 101A with grade of C or better or challenge test.
Description:
Reinforce phonics, introduction to laga matra, word formation and simple sentence formation; building vocabulary through sight words with equal emphasis on reading, writing, and conversation.
Location:
Room 2 for ages 6 to 11; for ages 12 and above contact office.

PL201:
Punjabi language level 3 for students ages 7 and above
Prerequisite:
PL101A and PL101B with grade of C or better or challenge test.
Description:
Reinforce phonics and vowels, coverage of basic Punjabi grammar with equal emphasis on reading, writing, conversation, and comprehension.
Final Exam:
Reading fluency, dictation and conversation tests.

Room 3; for ages 13 and above contact office.

PL301:
Punjabi language level 4 .
Prerequisite:
PL201 with grade of C or better or challenge test.
Description:
Reinforcement of basic Punjabi grammar and introduction of second level of Punjabi grammar. Building vocabulary and broadening of skills in comprehension and conversation.
Final Exam:
Reading fluency, grammar based written and conversation tests

PL401:
Punjabi language level 5
Prerequisite:
PL 301 with grade of C or better or challenge test.
Description:
Reinforcement of grammar through the topics covered in theology class, building vocabulary and broadening of skills in conversation and composition.
Midterm Exam:
Reading for critical thinking and conversation.
Final Exam:
Small essay writing, oral report, ten to fifteen minutes of conversation..

PL500 series:
These series are for students who want to learn the college level Punjabi language. For detailed information contact the admissions office.

SHTG101:
Introduction to Gurus through Sakhis, recitation of Mool Mantar, introduction to Ardaas, Tu Takur Tum Peh Ardaas.

SHTG201:
Students are introduced to Mool Mantar, Ardaas, and teachings of ten Gurus through small projects.
Location:

SHTG301A:
Sikh history and philosophy for elementary and middle school students covering period of first five Gurus.

SHTG301B:
Sikh history and philosophy for elementary and middle school students covering period from Guru Hargobind ji to Guru Gobind Singh ji.

SHTG301C:
Sikh history and philosophy covering modern period.
Prerequisite:
SHTG301B.

SHTG401A:
Introduction to most frequently used 100 words in Guru Granth Sahib through selected Gurbani, improve Gurbani reading fluency.

Fluent in reading and writing Punjabi

SHTG401B:
Introduction to most frequently used 100 words in Guru Granth Sahib through selected Gurbani.
Prerequisite:
SHTG401A

SHTG500:
For 500 series in Sikh history and theology contact teacher. Gurbani reading: continuation of sehaj path.

Objective of the Gurmat Sangeet classes is to teach students keertan in the raags as prescribed by the Gurus in Guru Granths sahib. The teachers are students trained by Bhai Kultar Singh ji of Bhai Avtar Singh Ragi Kirtan Taksaal, School of Praacheen Gurmat Snageet, New Delhi, India.

GS 100:
Introduction to Gurmat Sangeet through reciting Anand Sahib.

GS 101:
Gurmat Sangeet beginner’s level. For raags and taals to be covered contact school office.

GS 102:
Gurmat Sangeet level 2. For raags and taals to be covered contact school office.
Prerequisite:
GS101 with grade of C or better or challenge test.

GS 103:
Gurmat Sangeet level 3. For raags and taals to be covered contact school office.

GS 201:
Introduction to Gurmat Sangeet beginner’s level for all ages. For raags and taals to be covered see teacher.
